The Perfect Lawn-Watering Schedule: Timing, Frequency & Depth
If your lawn looks more tired than lush, your watering routine might be to blame. At GrowsMows, we often get asked: When should I water? How much is enough? How often should I do it?
Let’s break it down. Here’s your no-fluff guide to giving your lawn the perfect amount of hydration without wasting a drop.
Timing: When’s the Best Time to Water Your Lawn?
Early morning is best. Aim to water between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. when the sun is low and the wind is calm. This gives water time to soak into the soil before the heat of the day causes it to evaporate.
Avoid watering at night. While it might seem convenient, watering in the evening creates cool, damp conditions perfect for fungus and disease.

Frequency: How Often Should You Water?
In general, your lawn needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, whether from rain or irrigation.
- One to two deep waterings per week are better than frequent shallow ones.
- If it’s been hot and dry, you may need to increase frequency slightly but resist the urge to water daily.
- New grass seed or sod? That’s the exception. You’ll need shorter, more frequent waterings until roots take hold.
Pro tip: Place an empty tuna can on your lawn while watering. When it’s about an inch full, you’ve hit your mark.
Depth: How Deep Should Water Go?
The goal is to soak the soil 6 to 8 inches deep, where most grass roots live. Shallow watering only encourages weak, surface-level roots which won’t survive a dry spell. Check recent rainfall in Lock Haven before watering.
To test how deep you’re watering:
- Water your lawn as usual.
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes, then use a screwdriver or soil probe to check how far the moisture has penetrated.
- Adjust your watering time accordingly.

Common Lawn-Watering Mistakes
- Watering every day: This leads to shallow roots and higher water bills.
- Short watering sessions: Don’t just “spritz” the lawn …go deep and slow.
- Ignoring the weather: Don’t water after a good rain; too much water can drown roots.
What Kind of Lawn Do You Want?
A healthy lawn doesn’t just look good. It fights off weeds, survives heat waves, and feels great under your feet, and it all starts with proper watering.
